Consumers and business users are increasingly demanding access to information, entertainment, e-commerce, collaboration and communication services as an integrated experience, often in the context of a single application or device.
And due to the ready access to broadband networks, and multimedia-enabled applications and devices, users are able to combine communications/infotainment/commerce activities in real-time, using multi-media content. This has resulted in the creation of so-called "converged" or "triple-play" service capabilities, such as Voice-over-IP (VoIP), instant messaging, presence and availability, and realtime multimedia filesharing.
In order to realize new revenue opportunities by meeting these evolving end-user demands, telecom network operators and mobile and Internet device manufacturers are investing heavily in next-generation network (NGN) architectures based on Internet technologies and standards such as Session Initiation Protocol (SIP), Diameter, IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) and Telecom Web Services. In addition, network operators are deploying Service Delivery Platform (SDP), which allow for the rapid and cost-effective creation of new revenue-bearing services, bridging across both legacy telecom networks, and new IP-based networks.
The BEA WebLogic Communications Platform product family is the industry's first suite of telecom middleware products, which brings together in a single platform a comprehensive set of key industry-standard capabilities around Java EE, Internet, SIP-IMS, Telecom Web Services and SOA.
Currently, this platform consists of BEA WebLogic SIP Server, and BEA WebLogic Network Gatekeeper. These products specifically address the network operator's need to implement a new Services Layer for their NGN-IMS-SDP network implementations, so they can build out a diverse and uniquely differentiating portfolio of new services. BEA WebLogic® Network Gatekeeper
BEA WebLogic Network Gatekeeper is a highly extensible and scalable Telecom Web Services platform to control and manage 3rd party partner access into telecom networks. At the core is a powerful policy enforcement engine, which allows telecom network operators to enforce Service Level Agreements (SLA) with their partners at runtime. It also leverages the OSA/Parlay X Web Services standard, which allows telecom network capabilities such as SMS, MMS, location, call control and others to be exposed to developers, SIs and ISVs via high-level Telecom Web Services. The customers benefit from the realization of new revenue streams, and a cost-effective mechanism for managing 3rd party partners.
